Nanna was a guest columnist for the Icelandic newspaper Morgunblaðið in April 2010, shortly after OMAM won Músíktilraunir. The column was called “The Reader,” and in it Nanna talked about her reading habits and her favorite book.
The Reader: Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir, musician
The Devil, an Evil Fat Cat, Love, and More
One of the most interesting – but also one of the most difficult – things that I did in high school was to enroll in a course called Reading for Pleasure. I picked it because I thought it would be easy and would also give me an opportunity to read some good books.
Until then I hadn’t read many books, and certainly not for pleasure. I couldn’t have been more wrong, and this was one of the most difficult courses that I took. It cost me many sleepless nights, but there were considerable benefits; in the end I had completed bunch of good books.
The book that‘s on my nightstand right now is a graphic novel version of The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. The illustrations are by Klimowski and Schejbal.  Still, I not so lazy that I only read illustrated books; I did finish The Master and Margarita in the Reading for Pleasure class. I became fascinated with this book and story behind it; it was released no less than 26 years after Bulgakov‘s death.
I spent a long time looking for it in an antique bookstore downtown; I was determined to add it to my lonely bookshelf. Later, I was lucky enough to receive two versions of the book as gifts. The story is magnificent; I just started reading the book, but I’ve cheated a few times and looked at Woland‘s magic show. The devil, an evil fat cat, love, and Pontius Pilate – it‘s a strangely effective recipe for a book that is without doubt my favorite book.
