To celebrate 2 years of OMAM Army and the release of the 12 lyric videos for MHIAA we will be doing another #BigOfMonstersandMenListen! We will put all the lyric videos and a few bonus songs in a playlist on our youtube that you can play back to back on August 9th. For those of you new to #BigOfMonstersandMenListen, the point is to try to get the above hashtag trending on Twitter as we will all be listening and tweeting lyrics, etc at the same time. Of course, it could be a bit difficult to do that if you’re trying to watch youtube at the same time, so you can choose to either tweet and listen to your purchased version of the album or just listen along with the rest of us on youtube… Tweeting while watching the youtube videos is the way to go if possible. Feel free to ask if you have any questions!

#BigOfMonstersandMenListen starts in exactly 24 hours! Feel free to ask any questions and spread the word! And makes sure you are following us on Twitter!
Click here to see the playlist we put together for the listen

This interview with Nanna appeared in Morgunblaðið on October 25th, 2005. At the time, she was 16 years old and played under the name Josie. The translation is ours.

The Band of the People: Josie

FOLKY TROUBADOUR-MUSIC

The Band of the People this week is Josie. Morgunblaðið and mbl.is pick The Band of the People once every two weeks in order to promote and support the grassroots of Icelandic music. Our purpose is to draw attention to some of the numerous Icelandic bands who allow the public to download their music from the internet free of charge.

The Band of the People is in collaboration with Rás 2 and Rokk.is. The interview can be read on mbl.is, where you can also find links to the bands‘ songs, which are hosted by Rokk.is [note: rokk.is is now defunct, but the song “Josie” by Josie can be found on YouTube]. A song by Josie will be played today in the show “Poppland”, which is broadcast on Rás 2 from 12:45-4:00 each weekday.

Who is in the band?

Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir, guitar and vocals…it’s a one man band.

What is the philosophy behind the band?

Hmm…philosophy? I’m not sure.

When and how was the band started?

I had written a bunch of songs and decided to record them and upload them to rokk.is. I needed a name and Josie was the only name I could think of, because one of the songs is called Josie.

Who are your musical heroes?

Damien Rice, he’s a genius. His music is so sincere and honest.

Are there any Icelandic influences?

No, not really.

What do you think of Icelandic music today?

I think it has evolved a great deal. There are so many excellent bands right now. I’m very pleased to see how many great musicians there are in Iceland, and that they can promote their music through rokk.is.

Is it easy to get live gigs?

If you have the right connections, yes.

Is it easy to release your music to the public?

Yes, rokk.is is a great way to do that.

Tell us something about the songs that you have put on rokk.is.

These are songs that I wrote earlier this year. The quality of the recording isn’t great; I’m planning to re-record them and make them better. This is troubadour-style music with a folky touch, haha.

Who is the biggest party animal in the band?

My guitar..at least it makes the most noise :D

What are your current plans?

Stay at home and write a bunch of songs :) I’m also going to try to add members to the band.

Any final words?

Just thanks :)
